Kritinia has a long history that goes back to ancient centuries. According to mythology, it was built by Althaemenis from Crete.
The original settlement was close to the beach, but it was moved higher on the mountain Attavyros, for more protection against the pirates during the post-byzantine years.
The ancient village was finally sunk and just a few ruins remain, most of them under the sea surface. The only remainings on the shore are those of an old-christian temple.
The later security of the village was based on its Castle (Castello). That is why the village was until recently called "Castellos". The castle, a mixture of byzantine and middle age style, is well preserved.
Today's Kritinia is a purely agricultural village. It is Known for the fruits, especially grapes vegetables and olive oil. The most important sights of the area are: The port of Camiros Scala, where you can swim, eat at the fish taverns and refuel.

The beach of Copria, which is next to Cameiros Scala. It is a fishing spot with beautiful vegetation. You can swim, eat fish and and rent a room.
The Castle , near Copria, gloriously standing on the top of a hill, facing the sea. You really must visit this amazing sight, which is accessible by car . The beautiful village of Kritinia is just 3 kilometers far from the castle, built on the side of the mountain. It is certain that you will stop atChiotis point to take pictures and see the old wind-mill. Our Folklore Museum is built at the same location.

The view from Chiotis point is wonderful. The Castle in the front, the facing three little islands (Makri, Stroghili and Alimia ) and , a little further, Chalki.
Other important sights are the famous monastery of Panagia Amartos (5 km from the village) and the Agiopetra Cave near the monastery (a stony cave that drips holy-water).
But if it is adventure and uncompared pleasure what you look for, we recommend swimming at theVirgin Beach of Afilimiona and Kalami. The road is rough and our advice is to carry food and water, but you will be greatly rewarded by unforgettable feelings at your arrival.
